One Year Anniversary of Mom's Death and Our 35th Wedding Anniversary

Written on 11-30-25.

Yesterday was the anniversary of my mom’s death.  I was thankful to be able to be with her one last time on Thanksgiving last year.  I made the right choice, for sure.  Bev, Guy, and I commiserated about her death and honored her memory on a text thread yesterday.  Our parents are gone.  Sigh.

I recently grabbed an assortment of Dad’s belt buckles Bev said Curt found in their garage.  It was an assortment with trains, Corsairs, NRA guns, and more, and I just couldn’t let Bev sell them.  Fortunately, B was able to go gather them (Amanda went with her) when they was in Colorado Springs for Jess’s surgery.  Phew.  I also asked Bev to...

save a watch that belonged to our great grandfather on Dad’s side.  Glad to keep it in the family.  It’s missing part of the band, and I don’t even know if it will work.

When Bev put out all of the pictures of Mom’s jewelry, I didn’t bite.  Bev sent out multiple pictures, so we could send them on and offer them to our kids.  James wanted one watch Dad had, and Casey took some rings.  Danielle didn’t want anything until she saw some silver dishes later.  It’s funny what they ended up choosing.  Just like at our garage sales, it’s always a surprise what different people choose.

The weekend in Santa Fe was fabulous!  The highlight was the dinner at The Range Cafe in Bernalillo on Saturday night.  All of the “kids” were there, and we had delightful conversations, and of course, we got that rare and exceptional time with Rowan and Ben, too.  Each adult “kid” had a question for Belinda and me about how our marriage had been so successful for so long.  About halfway through, Casey had to feed Rowan, so we switched topics to everyone’s past week.  It was so wonderful that Belinda and I counted that as Thanksgiving dinner.  When we returned, B and I had a small “second” Thanksgiving with Jess (also very nice), but that time with our kids was incredible.

The Buffalo Thunder Resort was great, and our room was cozy!  I wanted to go back after I did that breakout presentation for Time to Teach, and I am so glad we did.  The room had two fireplaces and a king-sized bed.  We also had a patio facing the outdoor swimming pool and the mountains, although it was too cold to go outside.

Our dinner at The Red Sage Restaurant wasn’t pleasant, though.  Just awful food at a tremendous price.  The shrimp scampi I chose was no good.  Tough, not tender, shrimp and undercooked noodles.  Yuck.  I managed to eat it anyway.

We even got in some golf…

On to golf…

We played some putt-putt golf on Sunday after our terrible dinner.  The guy working there let us go around twice, and that made the experience even better.  It was fun.  I had hoped and planned on playing the Towa Golf Course, but it was closed due to the intermittent rain and colder temperatures.  B said she would have been my cart babe again, but it wasn’t meant to be for this trip.  I really didn’t mind; I just wanted to spend time with my wife.  The putt-putt was an added bonus I didn’t expect, and I got what I wanted: time alone with my wife.

I played on Friday at Pinon Hills.  The weather was outstanding back home for this time of year with temperatures in the high 50’s.  I played with a Lee and brothers Mike and Jim (last name) for nine holes.  The brothers played from the blues while Lee and I played from the whites.  I thanked the brothers for letting us play with them (with a hint of sarcasm), because I heard they preferred to play alone.  Makes sense, though.  I would rather play alone with Guy if we had the chance.

*Later in the evening…

Guy and I are watching the Broncos on Sunday Night Football.  It has just gone into OT.  Denver is leading 27-20, but it’s Washington’s ball.  It’s 4th and 6.  Pass interference on the Broncos.  Dang it!

Now, Washington has officially scored, and they are going for two to win it.  Nick Bonito has blocked the pass, though, and the Broncos win!

What a close and exciting game and what a wonderful way to spend time (alone) with my brother (wink, wink).

More on my round at Pinon Hills next time…
